Master of Teaching (Secondary)

Australian Catholic University, Multi-campus (7 campuses, 5 states), Australia

About this program

At 160 credit points, this is ACU's graduate-entry route into secondary teaching for people who already hold a relevant bachelor's degree in their intended teaching discipline. The course structure separates Curriculum, Pedagogy and Assessment (CPA) units, built around the student's first and second teaching areas, from Education Studies and Effective Teaching units that cover the theory and generalist teaching skills, plus a Professional Practice strand that includes teacher-led research and the mandatory LANTITE literacy and numeracy testing.

Professional experience is a minimum of 60 days of teaching rounds, split into three blocks rather than one long placement, which gives students a chance to apply feedback from an earlier round before the next one starts. That's backed by school-based tutorials and workshops that run alongside the formal placement blocks.

It's designed for career-changers or graduates from non-education degrees, such as someone with a science, humanities or maths background who's decided teaching is the destination, rather than students moving straight from an undergraduate education degree, who'd typically already hold a four-year initial teacher education qualification.
