Bachelor of Music (Creative Technology)

Australian Institute of Music, Sydney, NSW, Australia

About this program

Creative Technology is AIM's production and audio engineering major, and it runs on a genuinely different clock to the rest of the institute's degrees: domestic students can complete it in 6 study periods (2 years full-time), while international students on visa-compliant course loads take 9 study periods (3 years): the same content, different pacing rules.

Foundational units get hands-on fast: DAW navigation and editing for both musical and non-musical audio, MIDI editing, signal processing (EQ, compression), virtual instruments, and fundamental mixing sit in the early units rather than being saved for later specialisation. From there the degree moves into recording theory, sound design, mixing, and mastering, treating studio technology as a creative instrument in its own right rather than purely a technical support skill for other musicians.

Entry requires an interview and a portfolio of two contrasting pieces, and because the degree sits alongside AIM's Performance, Composition, and Music Theatre majors on the same campus, Creative Technology students frequently end up mixing, recording, or scoring work for students in those other streams as part of their coursework rather than only working on their own material.
