Bachelor of Music (Composition)

The Composition stream at AIM runs on trimesters (AIM calls them study periods, three a year) rather than a conventional semester calendar, so students move through composition theory, arranging, orchestration, and soundtrack work at a different pace than a typical conservatorium degree.

Composition Module 1 opens the degree by setting out the compositional and production fundamentals the rest of the course builds on. From there, industry-focused units have students designing and producing a full musical work in collaboration with peers from AIM's performance and creative technology streams rather than composing in isolation. A mid-term proposal presentation and a formal delivery are both assessed. A dedicated self-management unit, unusual for a composition degree, addresses the practical realities of a freelance creative career: resilience, collaboration, and the business side most conservatoire training skips.

The degree closes with a Final Major Project in the last trimester: a portfolio of compositions, a recording, or a multimedia work, built under one-to-one supervision alongside masterclasses and guest lectures from working composers. Electives can be pulled from AIM's performance, production, management, media, and technology streams, letting a composition student pick up mixing skills or music business units rather than staying confined to a single track.
