About this program
ANU built this Master of Computing for people who didn't start in computing: a lawyer, a biologist, an economist who wants to pivot into software or data work without redoing an undergraduate degree. Two years full-time gets a career-changer to a level where they're competitive for graduate roles at the big consultancies, government agencies, or tech firms that hire out of Canberra, and the Australian Computer Society accreditation matters if the plan is eventual professional registration.
The defining feature is the specialisation requirement: everyone picks one of seven tracks tied to an actual research group at the School of Computing, not a marketing label. Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning draw on ANU's decently well-known ML theory group; Computer Systems and Computational Foundations lean toward people who want to understand how the machine actually works rather than just call libraries. Human Centred and Creative Computing is the odd one out and tends to attract students with a design or humanities background.
What sets the finish line apart from a lot of conversion masters is the capstone choice between an internship and TechLauncher, ANU's client-project unit where teams of students solve a real problem for an external organisation (a startup, a government department, sometimes a research group) over two semesters. It's messier than a typical group assignment and that's the point; students who've done it talk about client meetings going sideways as much as the code.

- Year 1, Semester 1: Introduction to Computer Systems, Introduction to Programming, Data Structures, one specialisation-track course
- Year 1, Semester 2: Algorithms, Databases, Software Engineering, specialisation elective
- Year 2, Semester 1: Specialisation core courses (two), one computing elective, one general elective
Year 2, Semester 2: Capstone
- TechLauncher client project (two-semester, spans into final term) or Professional Practice Internship, remaining specialisation electives
- Exit points: 48 units completed at credit average or better allows exit with Graduate Diploma of Computing
- GPA above 6 allows transfer into Master of Computing (Advanced) with credit
Admissions
Bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) with a minimum GPA of 5.0/7.0, or a GPA of 4.0/7.0 plus 3 years full-time professional experience at ANZSCO Skill Level 1 in a related field.
