Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)
Australian National University, Canberra, ACT, Australia
About this program
ANU runs its engineering degree on what it calls a systems engineering framework, and the practical effect is that nobody picks a major until third year. Every student, whether they'll end up in mechatronics or renewable energy systems, does the same first two years of common engineering coursework. The rationale is that modern engineering projects rarely stay inside one discipline's boundary, so ANU wants graduates who understand how electronics, mechanical systems, and software interact before they specialise.
Specialisation options run through electronics and communications, mechatronics, aerospace, renewable energy, and environmental or nuclear systems, a broader spread of energy-related options than most Australian engineering schools offer, which tracks with ANU's research strength in energy systems and its physical proximity to national energy policy bodies.
Engineers Australia accreditation requires 12 weeks of full-time work experience outside the university, and ANU treats this as a genuine placement requirement rather than a box-ticking exercise. Students often use it to test out a specialisation area (a stint with an energy utility, for instance) before committing to it formally in third year.
