Bachelor of Nursing

Nursing is arguably the program Avondale is best known for outside its own denomination, largely because of the pipeline into Sydney Adventist Hospital ('the San') and other major health networks across the Hunter and Central Coast region. The course runs 24 units over six full-time semesters and builds in more clinical hours than the accreditation minimum: students log at least 800 hours of professional experience placement, starting from semester two once first-year prerequisites and pre-clinical checks (police check, vaccination status, National Police Certificate) are cleared.

What distinguishes the Avondale version from a standard metropolitan nursing degree is the deliberate inclusion of a whole-person model of care, a legacy of the university's Seventh-day Adventist health philosophy, which has produced a genuine research output in lifestyle medicine and preventive health (the same tradition behind the Blue Zones research on Adventist longevity in Loma Linda, California, that Avondale's own academics have contributed to). Clinical rotations cover acute medical/surgical wards, emergency and ICU exposure, maternal and child health, mental health, aged care and community settings, so graduates aren't narrowly trained into one specialty before they've even sat the registration exam.
