Medical Program* Bachelor of Medical Studies, Doctor of Medicine
Bond University, Gold Coast, QLD, Australia
About this program
Bond's Medical Program is the shortest path to a medical doctorate in Australasia: students complete two consecutive degrees, the Bachelor of Medical Studies and the Doctor of Medicine, in four years and eight months total rather than the five to six years most Australian medical degrees take. The Bachelor of Medical Studies runs for two years and eight months (eight trimesters) and builds foundational clinical knowledge and skills, after which the Doctor of Medicine runs for a further two years (six trimesters); both degrees are conferred together on completion of the MD.
Teaching in the first two years is problem-based: each week opens with a clinical case that the week's learning is built around, worked through in small interactive groups rather than large lectures. From the third year, students relocate to the Bond University Clinical Education and Research Centre at Robina Hospital for a full year immersed in a genuine hospital environment before moving into the MD's more advanced clinical phases. The MD is accredited at AQF level 9 as an Extended Masters Degree, and graduates meet the requirements for provisional medical registration, allowing them to begin accredited intern training toward full registration.
