Bachelor of Computer Systems (Networking)

Box Hill Institute, Melbourne, VIC, Australia

About this program

This degree runs 19 core units plus 5 electives drawn from a choice of majors (cyber security, networking, or cloud and virtualisation), with the Networking major itself sitting inside a broader Computer Systems degree rather than being sold as a standalone qualification.

First year is deliberately generalist: basic networking, cloud computing, and introductory programming, so students don't have to commit hard to networking specifically before they've seen the alternatives. Second year gets specific fast: operating systems, cyber security, network security, systems security, virtualisation, and programming for web applications, alongside business and communication units that a purely technical program often skips. Third year moves into emerging ICT technologies, advanced security or virtualisation techniques, and entrepreneurship and innovation.

Box Hill delivers this in partnership with Cisco, VMware, and Microsoft, which shows up in the practical, vendor-relevant skills the networking major targets. Those skills sit closer to what a network administrator or systems engineer does day to day than a purely theoretical computer science curriculum, and they're useful for students aiming at Cisco or Microsoft certifications alongside the degree itself.
