Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science

CDU's Exercise and Sport Science degree gets students into practical, sport-specific coursework earlier than many equivalent programs, which tend to spend most of first year on generic science prerequisites before students see anything resembling their actual field. Anatomy, physiology, psychology, coaching, and nutrition units appear from early in the course, and the program builds toward supervised placements rather than treating practical experience as an afterthought bolted onto the final semester.

A five-day compulsory residential intensive at the Casuarina campus plus 80 hours of practicum placement are built in specifically to satisfy Exercise and Sport Science Australia (ESSA) accreditation requirements: this matters for online and remote students, who make up a meaningful share of enrolments given the Territory's dispersed population, because it means even fully online students have to travel to Darwin at some point for the intensive component. Graduates come out eligible for ESSA accreditation as an Exercise Scientist (via the non-accredited pathway track) and can also seek membership with the Australian Strength and Conditioning Association, Sports Medicine Australia, and Fitness Australia.

Given the NT's demographics and remoteness, several placement partners work in community sport and remote/Indigenous health and physical activity settings, which is a different practicum flavour than the elite-sport or metro gym placements more common in programs at east-coast universities.
