About this program
CDU's plain Bachelor of Science is the flexible, build-your-own-major sibling to its more structured Environmental Science degree, and its real drawcard is what's on the university's doorstep: Kakadu, Litchfield, the Timor Sea, and some of the most intact tropical savanna and monsoon ecosystems left in the world. Research project options in the final year regularly draw on this: aquaculture, marine and freshwater ecology, botany, and zoology projects here look genuinely different from equivalent projects at a temperate-climate university, because the field sites and species are different.
Unlike a lot of generalist BSc degrees that are essentially a menu of first-year science subjects with no strong identity, CDU leans into its geography: field intensives take students into Northern and Central Australia and parts of the Asia-Pacific for hands-on data collection, which becomes a differentiator on a CV compared to lab-only science degrees. Students without a settled major can still keep options open through first year before choosing a direction.
It's worth being clear-eyed that CDU is not a large research-intensive science faculty compared to a Go8 university, so students chasing a narrow specialisation in, say, particle physics or advanced biochemistry will find the depth of elective offerings thinner than at a bigger institution. The strength here is specifically in field-based, tropical and environmental science.

5 terms of coursework
- Year 1: foundational units across two or more of Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Mathematics, Physics
- Year 2: discipline deepening in chosen area(s), plus statistics and research design
- Year 3: advanced electives and an independent or supervised research project (options include aquaculture, marine ecology, freshwater and terrestrial ecology, botany, zoology)
- Field components: optional field intensives in Northern and Central Australia and the Asia-Pacific region
- Total: 3 years full-time / 6 years part-time, on campus or online (lab units require on-campus attendance)
