Remote and Indigenous health placements are the defining feature of nursing at CDU in a way they simply aren't at most Australian nursing schools, because the Northern Territory has some of the most acute rural and remote health workforce shortages in the country. Students complete 800 hours of clinical placement across metropolitan and rural/remote settings, and those who've finished second-year scope-of-practice units plus the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health unit can apply for a four-week remote placement, run in partnership with NT Top End Health Service, that puts them into genuinely remote clinical settings most nursing graduates elsewhere never experience before registration.

That partnership-driven remote placement track is a real point of difference for students who know they want a career in remote area nursing, a distinct, higher-paid, higher-autonomy specialisation within Australian nursing that's hard to break into without exactly this kind of exposure during training. Indigenous students undertaking placements also have access to 'away from base' funding support, recognising that a lot of NT students are commuting from communities well outside Darwin.

The degree meets registration requirements set by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, so graduates can register as Registered Nurses nationally; the remote and Indigenous health specialisation is additive, not a trade-off against the standard national scope of practice.
