About this program
CQU's Bachelor of Nursing is designed around the reality that most of its students are studying regionally or fully online, with campus-based support available in Brisbane, Bundaberg, Cairns, Mackay, Rockhampton and Townsville. Before any of the 800 required placement hours happen, students complete simulated clinical training at a nominated Clinical Learning Centre, a practical necessity given how spread out CQU's delivery footprint is across Queensland.
The placement structure is genuinely demanding for regional and online students in a way a metropolitan-campus student might not experience: CQU is upfront that placements are sourced as locally as possible but aren't guaranteed to be, and students may need to relocate temporarily and cover the associated costs themselves. That trade-off, flexibility to study from almost anywhere in regional Queensland against the possibility of having to travel for clinical blocks, is a defining feature of the course rather than an edge case.

5 terms of coursework
- Year 1: Foundations of Nursing, Anatomy and Physiology, Introduction to Primary Health Care, first of six professional practice placements (following simulated Clinical Learning Centre training)
- Year 2: Medical-Surgical Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, Pharmacology, Pathophysiology, Research and Evidence-Based Practice, continued placement blocks
- Year 3: Complex Care Nursing, Maternal and Child Health, Aged and Chronic Care, Emergency Nursing, final capstone placement and Transition to Professional Practice
- 800 hours of professional practice placement across 6 blocks, commencing in first year
- Eligible for AHPRA registration as a Registered Nurse on completion
