CQU's engineering degree leans hard into dual-major combinations that most Australian engineering schools don't offer as standard: Electrical with Data Analytics, Electrical with Information Processing, and Civil with Humanitarian Engineering sit alongside the conventional Civil, Electrical and Mechanical majors, plus standalone Mechatronic and Resource Systems Engineering majors that run to 23 units rather than the standard load.

First year is structured around problem-solving, teamwork and professional practice before the major-specific technical content ramps up, and sustainability runs as an explicit overarching theme rather than a single elective, a reflection of CQU's regional footprint across mining, agriculture and resources-heavy parts of Queensland, where its engineering graduates most often end up working. The Humanitarian Engineering strand within Civil is a genuine point of difference, aimed at students interested in disaster response and development-sector infrastructure work rather than conventional civil contracting.
