Bachelor of Science (Nursing)

Curtin's undergraduate nursing degree runs 840 hours of clinical placement across the course (hospitals, private practices, aged care, rural health settings, and mental health services), which starts as early as second semester of first year, meaning students are shadowing real clinical environments well before most other health degrees would send them out. Placements can involve shift work including night duty and weekends by design, since the point is exposure to how hospitals actually run rather than a sanitised nine-to-five version of nursing.

The course structure leans heavily on simulation before fieldwork: Curtin's simulated practice labs are used to build competency in a controlled setting first, so that clinical placement time is spent applying skills rather than learning them cold in front of a patient. Given Curtin's status as WA's largest nursing school by intake, the simulation infrastructure (mock wards, standardised patients) is a genuine scale advantage over smaller providers.

Students are pushed toward interprofessional learning throughout, working alongside pharmacy, physiotherapy, and medical students in shared units rather than training in a nursing-only bubble, which mirrors how WA Health actually staffs its wards and is meant to make the transition into a graduate nurse year less of a culture shock.
