Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)

Curtin University, Perth, WA, Australia

About this program

Curtin runs its engineering degree through a common Engineering Foundation Year before anyone commits to a discipline. First-year students cover fundamentals shared across all engineering areas and only choose their major (from Chemical, Petroleum, Electrical and Electronic, Mechanical, Mechatronic, Civil and Construction, Metallurgical, Mining, Industrial and Systems, or Environmental Engineering) heading into second year, which gives students who arrive unsure between, say, mechanical and mechatronic engineering a genuine trial period rather than forcing a decision at enrolment.

The major list itself is a tell for what Curtin is known for regionally: Metallurgical, Mining, and Petroleum Engineering majors sit alongside the more universally-offered options, a direct reflection of Perth's position as headquarters city for most of Australia's mining and resources companies, and Curtin's engineering graduates in those majors tend to move directly into WA's resources sector rather than needing to relocate.

Final year is a genuine honours research project done independently within the chosen major, and students can add a four-unit specialisation or minor on top of their major to sharpen the degree toward a specific career direction, pairing Mechanical Engineering with a renewable energy specialisation, for instance.
