Master of Education

Edith Cowan University, Perth, WA, Australia

About this program

Rather than one generic Master of Education, ECU structures the degree around named specialisations: Behaviour and Wellbeing, Early Childhood Education, Learning Difficulties, Literacy Education, Special Education, and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). Each is built from the same four core units plus four specialisation-specific units, so the degree can serve very different practitioners (an early childhood educator and a TESOL specialist, for instance) without pretending one curriculum fits both.

The related Master of Education (Advanced) extends this into a two-year structure that lets students graduate with two specialisations rather than one, aimed particularly at international students who want both the additional academic communication development time and broader specialisation coverage before returning to their home education systems or seeking WA teaching roles. Both versions target practising teachers and education professionals wanting formal postgraduate standing rather than beginning teachers, since the units assume classroom experience as a base.

Given ECU's strong existing footprint in initial teacher education across Western Australia, a lot of the postgraduate cohort are ECU-trained teachers returning for career progression into specialist, leadership, or coordinator roles, though the program draws students from other teacher-training backgrounds and overseas as well.
