About this program
ECU offers an unusually wide spread of engineering specialisations for a mid-sized Australian university: civil, civil and environmental, chemical, mechanical, mechatronics, computer systems, electrical power, electrical and renewable energy, electronics and communications, and instrumentation control and automation are all separate accredited streams rather than a generic engineering degree with late-stage electives. The renewable energy and electrical power streams in particular line up with Western Australia's expanding renewables and grid infrastructure sector, which has grown substantially as WA moves away from its historical reliance on gas peaking plants.
The degree is delivered from the purpose-built Joondalup campus, which houses dedicated engineering labs and equipment for each specialisation rather than shared generalist facilities, meaningful for hands-on disciplines like mechatronics or instrumentation control where lab access shapes how much practical skill students actually build before graduating. It's a four-year Honours-embedded structure (Engineers Australia accredited), so students don't need to apply separately or add an extra year to graduate with Honours standing, unlike some universities that treat Honours as a bolt-on fifth year.
Given WA's resources sector dominance, civil, electrical power, and instrumentation control graduates in particular find a strong local employment pipeline into mining, oil and gas, and utilities work, while the computer systems and mechatronics streams connect more to Perth's smaller but growing tech and automation employers.
