Bachelor of Social Work

Federation's social work degree is one of the newer additions to its Institute portfolio, delivered from Mt Helen and Berwick and built around what the university calls an eco-systems and empowerment approach: framing social problems as sitting across natural, built and social environments rather than treating client issues in isolation. It carries provisional accreditation with the Australian Association of Social Workers, the professional body that ultimately gates registration for graduates wanting to practise.

The standout feature is the sheer volume of placement: 140 days spread across the four years, putting students into real agency settings working with child protection, youth services, mental health, palliative care, and family violence response, under supervision from practising social workers rather than university staff alone. That's a heavier placement load than many comparable degrees and reflects the profession's own accreditation requirements more than a Federation-specific choice, but it does mean graduates arrive at their first job with substantially more direct client-contact hours than a typical undergraduate.

Academically the course threads casework and counselling skills alongside a critical social policy lens: students spend real time on structural causes of disadvantage (housing, income support, colonisation and its ongoing effects on Aboriginal communities) rather than treating social work purely as an individual helping profession.
