Bachelor of Education (Primary)

Flinders University, Adelaide, SA, Australia

About this program

A minimum of 80 days of professional experience placement across four years is the load-bearing feature of this degree, structured as escalating blocks - a Year 1 placement, then Year 2A and 2B placements, then a final assessment placement in the fourth year - each one building toward the classroom competencies the Teachers Registration Board actually checks for. Students need a Child-Related Employment Screening cleared before their very first placement in first semester, which tells you how early the practical component starts relative to the classroom coursework.

Before the professional experience topics can be undertaken, students also have to clear the national Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students (LANTITE) - a requirement that trips up a nontrivial number of otherwise strong students each year, so it's factored into the course structure rather than left as an afterthought. At 144 units over four years, this is a longer undergraduate degree than most, reflecting both the academic content and the placement hours needed for teacher registration.

The R-7 (Reception to Year 7) scope means graduates are prepared specifically for primary schooling rather than a K-12 generalist qualification, and Flinders positions the placements across a genuine variety of primary school settings rather than concentrating them at one or two partner schools.
