Bachelor of Science (Marine Biology)

This is a degree built around getting students out of the classroom and into the water early and often - reef monitoring, wildlife surveys and field data collection are treated as core skills rather than optional add-ons. Flinders runs local field trips across South Australia's coastline alongside international research trips (South Africa has been a recent destination) and offers scientific diving courses in Palau, which is an unusual level of overseas fieldwork access for an undergraduate marine biology program.

Coursework moves from broad ecology and biodiversity foundations into specific upper-level units like Marine Mammals, Birds and Reptiles, Fisheries Biology, Science and Management, and Restoration Ecology, culminating in a dedicated Research Project in Marine Science. The specialisation runs three years full-time within the broader Bachelor of Science structure, so students graduate with both the general science degree credential and a clearly labelled marine biology specialisation.

Climate change, conservation and fisheries management run through the curriculum as recurring themes rather than a single unit, reflecting where a lot of marine biology employment actually sits now - government environment departments, fisheries management bodies and conservation NGOs as much as pure research roles.
