Bachelor of Music

Griffith's Bachelor of Music is taught out of the Queensland Conservatorium at South Bank, right on the river next to QPAC, and the location isn't incidental: students get placement and performance opportunities with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and Opera Queensland that a conservatorium without that kind of civic neighbour couldn't offer as routinely.

The Con's jazz program has a genuinely strong national reputation, built up over decades and associated with figures like James Morrison who've had long-running connections to the school, and it draws students specifically for that stream rather than classical performance, which is unusual for an Australian conservatorium where classical training still tends to dominate enrolment numbers.

Students choose a principal study early, classical performance, jazz, popular music, or composition and music technology, and the degree structure from second year onward is built almost entirely around one-on-one instrumental or vocal tuition plus ensemble work, which means the timetable looks very different to a standard university degree: far fewer large lectures, far more small-group and individual contact hours, and assessment that's mostly recital and portfolio based rather than written exams.
