Bachelor of Information Systems

Holmes Institute, Multi-campus (Melbourne, Sydney, Gold Coast), Australia

About this program

This is a three-year degree for students who want an IT qualification with a business faculty attached rather than an engineering one: the difference matters, because the emphasis throughout is on systems that support organisations (databases, ERP-adjacent platforms, business analytics) rather than low-level programming or hardware. Holmes teaches it out of its Melbourne CBD and Sydney campuses to a mostly international cohort, many of whom are using the degree as a stepping stone toward the 189/190 skilled migration occupation lists that include ICT business analyst and systems analyst roles.

The 24-unit structure moves from foundational programming and database units in year one through systems analysis and network fundamentals in year two, before a final year that includes an IT project unit where students build and document a working system end to end. It suits someone who wants employable IT skills without committing to a heavier computer science or software engineering load, though students aiming specifically at software development roles at larger tech employers may find a more technically dense degree from a research university better positioned for that path.
