About this program
This is one of JCU's flagship postgraduate degrees, built around the university's standing as a global hub for coral reef research. Students work directly with researchers connected to the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies and use the Orpheus Island Research Station on the Great Barrier Reef as a routine part of coursework, not an occasional field trip. Core units include Advances in Marine Biology and Evidence and Controversy in Marine Science, both built to push students past undergraduate-level acceptance of textbook knowledge into critically engaging with live scientific debates in the field.
Students choose a major and then draw from an elective list that reads like a checklist of Great Barrier Reef research priorities: coral reef geomorphology, tropical marine ecology and coastal impacts, marine conservation biology, evolution and ecology of reef fishes, coral reef ecology, marine reserves as fisheries management tools, and the life history and evolution of reef corals. JCU frames the degree around five employer-demanded skill areas: marine biology, mathematics and statistical modelling, environmental science and management, marine and microbial ecology, and cross-disciplinary work, rather than a single narrow specialisation.
Graduates go into marine research institutions, conservation NGOs, government marine management agencies, and PhD study, with JCU's own research track record in reef science giving the degree real currency among employers in that space specifically.
