About this program
JCU's engineering degree runs across its Townsville and Cairns campuses with specialisations spanning civil, mechanical, electrical and renewable energy engineering, and the renewable energy stream in particular draws on North Queensland's genuine solar and wind resource base and the region's active renewable energy project pipeline. Like most Australian engineering degrees it's accredited by Engineers Australia and structured around a common early-years core: engineering mathematics, mechanics, materials, before students specialise.
What distinguishes it locally is the industry base students place into: North Queensland's mining services, tropical infrastructure (engineering built to cyclone-resistant standards is a genuinely different design problem than temperate-climate engineering), and renewable energy generation give JCU engineering graduates exposure to problems that don't come up in the same way at southern universities. Placement and industry-based project components are built into the later years, typically arranged with regional employers in mining services, utilities, or infrastructure contractors.
The honours year culminates in an independent capstone design or research project, commonly tackling a real regional engineering problem sourced from an industry partner, and graduates are well placed for roles across Queensland's resources, utilities, and infrastructure sectors specifically.
