Bachelor of Medical Science (Honours)

JCU's Medical Science Honours degree is a research-intensive four-year program that sits apart from the university's MBBS track: students here are working toward a biomedical science research qualification, not a clinical medical degree, though the two share early foundational science content and some students use this degree as a pathway into graduate-entry medicine. The honours year is built entirely around an independent, supervised research project, giving students a full year of genuine laboratory or field research experience with a personal academic advisor rather than the shorter research components typical of a standard science honours year elsewhere.

Core science content across the first three years covers human anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, pathology and biomedical research methods, with JCU's own research strengths in tropical medicine and infectious disease giving students exposure to research questions such as melioidosis, dengue, and tropical parasitology that most southern universities can't offer the same depth on.
