Master of Information Technology
Melbourne Polytechnic, Melbourne, VIC, Australia
About this program
Melbourne Polytechnic's Master of IT is built for people who already have a degree in something else and want a fast, credible route into tech. Most cohorts are a mix of career-changers - former accountants, engineers, nurses - and international students chasing an ICT-eligible qualification, and the teaching reflects that: less theory-for-its-own-sake, more "here's how a helpdesk escalation actually gets triaged" or "here's what a real data pipeline looks like when the source data is a mess."
Students choose a major in either Cyber Security or Data Analytics partway through. The cyber stream leans on Melbourne Polytechnic's security labs and covers penetration testing, incident response and governance frameworks rather than just theory; the data analytics stream uses SAS software under the college's long-running partnership with SAS Institute, so graduates finish with an industry credential most competitors don't hand out. Class sizes in the specialist units are small enough that lecturers know who's struggling with SQL joins by week three.
It's a two-year full-time course (part-time options exist for people working while they study), and because it's TAFE-adjacent rather than a sandstone university, fees sit well below comparable Melbourne master's programs while still carrying full postgraduate status for visa and PR-pathway purposes.
