Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Civil)
Melbourne Polytechnic, Melbourne, VIC, Australia
About this program
This is a four-year degree, longer than the typical three-year applied bachelor's, and the extra year buys something real: everyone does the same core civil engineering subjects for the first two years, then in years three and four splits into structural engineering, municipal/transportation, or construction management. Nobody has to decide their specialty at eighteen before they've poured a single test cylinder of concrete.
Work-integrated learning is threaded through the degree rather than bolted on as a single placement block at the end - students work alongside industry partners on real projects, which matters in civil engineering more than most fields because so much of the job is site-specific judgment that a lecture theatre can't teach. Entry requires a selection interview on top of academic results, which filters for people who actually want to build roads and drainage systems rather than just wanting an engineering degree in the abstract.
Graduates land in urban planning, infrastructure delivery, geotechnical consulting and site engineering roles, largely across Melbourne's outer-suburban growth corridors where Melbourne Polytechnic's Preston and Epping campuses are well placed.
