About this program

Monash runs engineering on a common first-year model: everyone, regardless of eventual specialisation, takes the same core units (engineering design, foundation or first-year mathematics, and physics) and only nominates a discipline (civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical, aerospace, robotics and others) at the end of that first year. Students who come in without VCE Specialist Maths above a 30 study score or Physics above 25 get funnelled into foundation-level maths and physics units (ENG1090, PHS1001) rather than failing behind immediately, which is a fairly deliberate design choice to keep the entry bar from excluding capable students who took a different Year 12 subject mix.

The degree is automatically an Honours degree at Monash, with no separate pass/honours split like some universities use, and it's accredited by Engineers Australia, which matters for graduates planning to work in jurisdictions that recognise the Washington Accord. Double-degree combinations with Science, Arts, IT and Commerce are common exit points from this course code, often adding a year but broadening the graduate's options considerably.

Monash's engineering faculty also has a genuinely large footprint in applied research: biomedical engineering, materials, and autonomous systems groups all have industry-linked labs students can access in later years, which shows up in the diversity of final-year project topics on offer.

Course structure

4 terms of coursework

  • Common first year: engineering design, engineering mathematics (or foundation mathematics ENG1090 if required), foundation/first-year physics, introduction to engineering practice
  • Years 2–3: discipline-specific core units following chosen branch (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical & Computer Systems, Chemical, Aerospace, Robotics, and others), engineering mechanics, materials, systems and design sequences
  • Year 4: advanced discipline electives, professional practice and ethics, industry-based or research final-year project (thesis-equivalent)
  • Total: 4 years full-time (minimum), Engineers Australia accredited
  • double-degree variants extend to 5 years

ATAR ~90+ with Units 3/4 Maths Methods and a study score in Chemistry or Physics recommended

IELTS 6.5 overall, no band below 6.0
