Bachelor of Biomedical Science

Biomedical Science at Monash is structured thematically rather than by traditional subject silos. Students move through blocks on molecular and cellular biology, body systems, infection and immunity, and disease and society, which mirrors how the material actually gets used in research and clinical settings rather than how it's divided in a typical high school curriculum.

The degree functions as a well-worn feeder into Monash's medical program: at least 50 places in the Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine course are reserved specifically for Monash biomedical science graduates each year, which is a meaningful number for local students who didn't get a Year 12 ATAR high enough for direct medical entry but perform strongly at university. It also feeds into the Honours year and a wide range of biomedical research groups across the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences.

Because the degree sits inside a faculty with heavy NHMRC-funded research activity, students doing well by second year can often pick up vacation research placements in active labs, something that matters more here than at institutions where undergraduate research access is thinner. The trade-off is that the degree is fairly locked-in content-wise in first year, with less room for electives outside the biomedical sequence than in a general science degree.
