Master of Information Technology

Monash's Faculty of IT runs this degree as a deliberately open door for career-changers: about half of each cohort arrives without an IT background, and the first eight-unit foundations block (Part A) is built to bring them up to a common baseline in programming, systems and data before anyone picks a specialisation. That structure means a philosophy graduate and a working developer can sit in the same room in trimester one and be on roughly even footing by trimester three.

Seven specialisation streams rotate through the course (not all run every year, since staffing follows research strength), spanning areas like cybersecurity, data science, artificial intelligence and software development practice. Students aren't required to commit to one; plenty graduate having sampled across two or three, which suits people using the degree to figure out which corner of IT they actually want.

The distinguishing feature is the exit choice in the final part of the course: a minor thesis under a supervisor, or an Industry Experience Studio where teams work a real client brief end to end. Faculty of IT industry partners have included organisations across finance, health and government IT in Victoria, and the studio model produces a portfolio artefact rather than just a transcript line, something international graduates in particular lean on when applying for jobs that ask for local project experience.
