Master of Data Science

Monash University, Melbourne, VIC, Australia

About this program

This is one of the few Monash IT postgraduate courses explicitly designed to admit students with no coding or maths background alongside computer science graduates, then bring both groups to the same level by the halfway point. The 96-point structure splits into a foundations block, core data science units covering data pre-processing, analysis and visualisation, and an electives block where students specialise in machine learning, text and semi-structured data, or large-scale data handling.

Where the course earns its keep is the exit project. Students choose between a Minor Thesis under a research supervisor or an Industry Experience pathway, and both routes require FIT5122 IT Professional Practice, a unit that puts postgraduate IT and data science students into small teams working an actual client problem, often for local businesses or public-sector bodies via Monash's industry partnerships. For a field where employers routinely ask for "real project experience" over coursework grades, that's a meaningful difference from a coursework-only masters.

Monash's Data Science group draws on links with CSIRO's Data61 and the university's own Monash Data Futures Institute, so students working toward the thesis option can end up co-supervised by researchers active in applied ML rather than purely academic theory.
