Bachelor of Science / Doctor of Veterinary Medicine

Murdoch University, Perth, WA, Australia

About this program

Murdoch runs the only veterinary school in Western Australia, and this is its flagship pathway: a three-year Bachelor of Science (Veterinary Biology) that transitions directly into a two-year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, with the DVM itself run across trimesters rather than standard semesters to compress five years of content into the combined structure. Students don't apply separately into the DVM. The two qualifications are integrated by design, though academic progression standards still apply at the transition point.

The degree gives access to genuinely rare undergraduate infrastructure for an Australian veterinary program: a working teaching hospital treating companion animals, exotics, farm animals and horses, plus an operational farm, all on the same Perth campus rather than split across satellite sites. Species-group electives ("streaming") let students start weighting their final years toward large animal, equine or small animal practice depending on where they see their career heading, and the final year is largely spent immersed in the teaching hospital rather than in lecture theatres.

Because the DVM sits at AQF level 9, a master's-equivalent qualification, this is one of the longer and more structured pathways in the Murdoch catalogue, and the tuition reflects the cost of running live-animal clinical training rather than being comparable to a standard science degree.
