Master of Fine Arts (Directing)

The Master of Fine Arts (Directing) is an 18-month, full-time studio course rather than a research degree: there is no thesis in the academic sense, only a body of directed work culminating in NIDA's Festival of Emerging Artists, where each graduating director stages a 40-minute production in front of the public and industry. Entry is by audition and interview, typically drawing on applicants who already have some directing or assistant-directing experience in theatre, screen or opera, and cohorts are small enough that supervisors can shape training around each director's existing voice rather than a fixed syllabus.

The course moves across classical text, contemporary and devised work, screen directing and opera, on the reasoning that a director who has only ever staged one mode of performance is under-prepared for the freelance reality of the profession. Alumni tracked by NIDA include Tony-nominated director Kip Williams, Emmy and DGA-recognised director Shannon Murphy, and Opera Queensland's Patrick Nolan, a spread that reflects the course's insistence on cross-form fluency rather than specialising early.

Because the degree culminates in a publicly reviewed festival rather than a closed assessment, graduating directors leave with a produced, witnessed piece of work and, often, the first professional relationships that come from being seen by working practitioners in the room.
