Master of Information Technology (Computer Science)

This is QUT's conversion and advanced-standing pathway into computer science at postgraduate level: it takes students with an IT-adjacent or quantitative background (sometimes without a CS-specific undergraduate degree) and builds them up through core computing fundamentals before letting them specialise in the computer science stream, which covers algorithms, software engineering practice and more advanced topics like machine learning or systems programming depending on electives chosen.

QUT's IT faculty sits close to Brisbane's growing tech and games sector, and the program includes an industry project unit in most specialisations, connecting students with real companies for a semester-length applied piece of work rather than a purely academic thesis. This industry-facing structure is a deliberate differentiator from more research-oriented computer science master's programs at other universities.

International students using the degree as a skilled-migration pathway make up a substantial share of the cohort, and the computer science specialisation specifically targets the kind of software development and systems roles that align with Australia's skilled occupation lists, though the degree's actual content is solid computing education rather than a migration-only credential.
