Master of Data Science

Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, QLD, Australia

About this program

Run out of QUT's Centre for Data Science, this master's leans on staff who do applied analytics work with government and industry partners rather than a purely theoretical statistics faculty, and that shows up most in the final capstone, where students take on an industry project or industry research placement working with a real dataset and stakeholder rather than a simulated one. The course covers computational data science, statistical modelling, machine learning and information systems analytics as named specialisation strands, letting students lean the degree toward whichever of those areas matches their prior background and career target.

It's designed as a conversion-friendly degree: QUT accepts students from a range of quantitative undergraduate backgrounds, not just computer science or statistics, provided they can pick up the programming and stats foundations in the early units. Python, R and SQL are the working tools throughout, with dedicated units on big data infrastructure and data visualisation alongside the modelling content.

Graduates go into data analyst, data scientist and data engineering roles across finance, government and increasingly health-sector employers in Brisbane and beyond, with QUT's teaching staff research connections in finance and public-sector data work feeding directly into the kinds of case studies used in class.
