Bachelor of Data Science (Business Data Science)
Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, QLD, Australia
About this program
This is QUT's attempt to sit data science and commerce in the same degree rather than bolting a stats minor onto a business degree or vice versa. The Business Data Science specialisation keeps the core data science spine (programming, statistics, machine learning, databases) but routes the applied units and electives toward business analytics, decision science and the kind of reporting and forecasting work that sits inside marketing, finance and operations teams rather than pure research.
QUT built its data science offerings around the university's Centre for Data Science, and the teaching staff include people doing applied analytics work with government and industry partners, which shows up in the project-based later units where students work with real (or realistically messy) datasets rather than cleaned textbook examples. Python and R are the working languages, SQL and data visualisation tools get dedicated unit time, and there's a capstone industry project in the final year.
Graduates land in business intelligence, data analyst and junior data science roles, generally with employers who want someone who can talk to a marketing or finance team as comfortably as they can build a model. The degree's business framing is a genuine differentiator from a straight computer-science-flavoured data science degree.
