QUT structures its civil engineering degree around a genuinely substantial placement requirement: 60 days, or roughly 450 hours, of professional work placement that students complete across the degree rather than in one block, arranged through QUT's relationships with firms like CPB Contractors, John Holland, Lendlease, GHD, Stantec and BMD, plus government infrastructure agencies. That placement load is the thing that differentiates the QUT version of a civil degree from a more theory-heavy equivalent: students graduate having actually spent time on-site or in a design office, not just having done capstone coursework that simulates it.

The technical content covers the expected core: structures, geotechnical engineering, hydraulics and water resources, transport engineering. QUT's location gives students exposure to subtropical/Queensland-specific engineering problems like flood mitigation, cyclone-resilient design and bushfire-adjacent infrastructure, areas where QUT researchers have an active applied research presence.

The Honours designation is built into the four-year degree rather than a separate add-on year, in line with Engineers Australia's accreditation requirements, and the capstone project in final year typically tackles a real or realistic industry brief rather than a purely academic design exercise.
