Bachelor of Design (Communication Design)
RMIT University, Melbourne, VIC, Australia
About this program
Worth flagging up front: this course is being renamed Bachelor of Graphic Design from Semester 1 2026, so the current program on record reflects the last cohorts under the Communication Design name before the structural refresh. The content itself has always centred on studio learning taught by working designers rather than career academics - RMIT is explicit that all lecturers have design industry backgrounds, which shows up in how briefs get set and critiqued.
Course content spans corporate and brand identity, UX, digital convergence, print and digital publication design, packaging, and what RMIT calls "intercultural design" - working across cultural and linguistic contexts rather than assuming a single default audience. Assessment leans heavily on physical and digital artefacts - actual books, logos, packaging objects - reviewed by both academic staff and industry clients, so the critique culture mirrors what a junior designer would face in a studio job rather than a purely academic marking rubric.
Graduates go into graphic design, branding, advertising and illustration roles across consultancies as well as in-house design teams inside corporate, government and NGO settings.
