Bachelor of Architectural Design

Design studio work starts in the very first semester here rather than being held back until students have "earned" it through a year of theory - RMIT runs the studios like a working architecture practice from day one, and they typically make up half of each semester's workload. Groups stay small, and from second semester onward students actually choose which studio project and theme to follow rather than being assigned one, so the degree lets people specialise in interests (housing, urban design, materials experimentation) earlier than most architecture programs allow.

The supporting subjects - technology, communication, history - fill out the rest of the degree and are there specifically to give studio work real technical and historical grounding, not to function as separate academic silos. It's explicitly a pathway degree: this bachelor's alone isn't the endpoint, it feeds into RMIT's Master of Architecture and the accreditation that comes with it, so most students here already know they're in for five-plus years of study total before registration.

The appeal for prospective students is usually the intensity of the studio culture and the small-group, project-based teaching model over the sheer volume of design work produced by third year.
