About this program
This is a four-year honours degree (eight years part-time) run out of RMIT's Melbourne City campus, and unlike a lot of civil engineering programs that treat sustainability as one unit among many, RMIT built environmental sustainability into the degree's core framing from the start - students are explicitly being trained to plan and manage infrastructure with that lens built in, not bolted on later.
Specialisation choices span civil infrastructure, geotechnical engineering, structures, transport and water resources, selected via electives rather than a hard major declaration, which keeps students' options open until they've actually experienced enough of each area to know what they prefer. Work-integrated learning is a real feature rather than a token requirement: students can take part in the Engineers Without Borders Challenge, sustainable design-and-build projects, industry capstones, and placements both in Australia and overseas, giving genuine variety in how the "real-world experience" requirement gets satisfied.
RMIT also foregrounds communication, teamwork and leadership skills throughout the degree and has an active push on diversity in engineering enrolment, which shows up in how project teams get formed and assessed rather than just in marketing copy.
