About this program
RMIT's Master of IT gives students seven specialisations to choose from - big data analytics, cloud infrastructure, AI in systems and applications, mobile and IoT computing, security and blockchain, software systems architecture, and web systems and search technology - which is an unusually wide spread for a two-year master's. Most competitor programs pick two or three tracks and call it done; RMIT built this one with industry partners specifically so students could chase whichever corner of tech was actually hiring that year.
Teaching mixes pre-recorded short lectures with lectorials, hands-on lab classes and project work, which suits the many students juggling part-time work in Melbourne's CBD-adjacent tech scene - RMIT's city campus location isn't incidental to that. The 192-credit-point load (full load for someone without recent related study) runs across roughly two years, with a research or industry project toward the end that's meant to function as a portfolio piece for job applications, not just an assessment box to tick.
Because the specialisations map fairly directly onto ANZSCO-recognised IT occupations, it's a common choice for students building toward a skills assessment for Australian permanent residency, alongside those simply wanting a technical master's from a university with a strong industry reputation in tech.

3 terms of coursework
- Year 1: Programming Fundamentals, Data Structures and Algorithms, Database Concepts, IT Research Methods, Software Engineering Fundamentals, Networking
- Year 2: chosen specialisation core courses (e.g. Big Data Analytics, Cloud Computing Architecture, Applied Machine Learning, IoT Systems, Cyber Security Fundamentals, depending on stream) plus electives
- Final semester: Capstone Project or Industry-Based Learning placement
Admissions
Bachelor's degree (any discipline, AU or equivalent overseas) with GPA 2.0/4.0, or 5+ years relevant IT work experience (programming, software engineering, systems/business analysis, ICT management, etc.) in lieu of a degree.
