Diploma of Nursing

This is the qualification that produces Enrolled Nurses in Western Australia: a genuinely different clinical scope from the Registered Nurse pathway that runs through university, and South Metro TAFE builds the course around human biology, medical terminology, pharmacology and person-centred care rather than the broader theory base of a nursing degree. Placement here is not optional or arranged loosely: it's mandatory for completion, and the college organises it directly rather than leaving students to find their own healthcare facility.

The placement conditions are worth being upfront about because they surprise some students: shifts run across the full week including public holidays, in week-long blocks, and can be rostered morning, afternoon or night, a genuine simulation of shift-work nursing rather than a business-hours internship. Facilities used for placement can be up to a 45-minute drive from campus, and transport and parking costs during placement are the student's own responsibility, which matters for people budgeting around a full-time study load.

Every student is issued a clinical placement handbook to document progress and works under the direct supervision of a nominated registered nurse throughout, a structured, closely supervised model reflecting how much is genuinely at stake in nursing placements compared with most other vocational diplomas.
