About this program
This diploma assumes students already have hands-on networking competence before day one: the college is explicit that applicants should already be comfortable deploying and configuring virtual machines, subnetting, and configuring switches and routers, and points people without that background toward the Certificate IV in IT (Networking) first. That's a more practical entry bar than a generic "must have completed Year 12" requirement, and it keeps the diploma cohort at a more consistent skill level than open-entry courses often achieve.
Every SM TAFE diploma-level IT unit set folds in cyber security awareness, client management and professional ethics regardless of specialisation, so networking students aren't learning switch configuration in isolation from the security and client-facing skills that actual network administrator jobs require day to day.
The course is squarely vocational rather than theoretical. The training is built around current industry equipment and standards rather than networking theory divorced from what employers are actually running, which suits students aiming directly at network administrator, IT support or junior systems engineer roles rather than further academic study.

5 terms of coursework
- Prerequisite skills (or Certificate IV in IT - Networking): VM deployment and configuration, subnetting, switch and router configuration
- Core units: advanced network design and implementation, network security and threat management, server administration, cloud infrastructure fundamentals
- Cross-diploma units (all SM TAFE IT diplomas): cyber security awareness, working in teams, client management skills, ethics and privacy in IT
- Elective units: selected in consultation with industry, aligned to current networking equipment and standards
- No formal industry placement
