Diploma of Accounting

South Metropolitan TAFE, Perth, WA, Australia

About this program

The standard-level Diploma of Accounting (FNS50222) is the more common entry point into professional accounting study at South Metro TAFE, sitting below the Advanced Diploma and typically taken by people who haven't yet worked in the field rather than those already employed and upskilling. It shares the same no-mandatory-placement structure as the Advanced Diploma: the assumption is that competency is demonstrated through simulated business scenarios and assessment tasks rather than a supervised workplace stint.

Like its advanced counterpart, delivery is mostly online with scheduled on-campus attendance for assessments, and the college flags 10-15 hours a week of expected self-directed study on top of scheduled contact. Accounting coursework tends to be assignment-heavy and cumulative, so falling behind on one unit's calculations makes the next unit noticeably harder.

Graduates commonly move into bookkeeping, accounts assistant or accounts payable/receivable roles, and the diploma functions as a credit-bearing pathway into further study, either the Advanced Diploma for those wanting Tax Agent registration eligibility, or articulation into a related university accounting degree for students who decide partway through that they want the fuller qualification.
