Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)

Swinburne runs two versions of this degree side by side: the standard Bachelor of Engineering (Honours), where a Professional Placement is optional (a 6- or 12-month placement can exempt students from the standalone Professional Experience in Engineering unit), and the Professional variant, which builds a paid 12-month industry placement directly into the course structure as a compulsory co-major worth 100 credit points. That's an unusually large chunk of the degree carved out for placement rather than coursework, and it reflects Swinburne's long-standing industry-integrated learning model, which predates most Australian universities' recent push toward more work-integrated learning.

Students choose an engineering discipline major (the university's strengths run toward mechanical, electrical, aerospace and robotics/mechatronics given Swinburne's Hawthorn campus facilities and manufacturing partnerships in Melbourne's east), and Engineers Australia accreditation means placement components are assessed specifically against the competencies that body requires for professional registration, not just generic employability skills.

Graduates of the Professional stream leave with a full year of documented, assessed industry experience already on their CV, which functions as a meaningful head start over graduates whose only industry exposure was a short vacation placement.
