Students in this degree start flying in week three, not after a year of ground school. Swinburne's flight training partner CAE Melbourne Flight Training operates out of Moorabbin Airport, one of the busiest general aviation airports in the country, giving students frequent, high-volume flight hours on a large modern fleet plus simulators rather than sporadic, weather-dependent bookings at a smaller school. The commercial flying component is built to Air Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL) theory standard as set by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, and students exit holding a Commercial Pilot Licence with multi-crew jet aircraft operating experience.

The degree isn't just flight training wrapped in a university label: a genuine piloting major sits alongside ten aviation core units and six units of minor/elective study, covering aviation human factors, aviation management and aviation technology, so graduates come out understanding the operational and regulatory side of the industry, not just stick-and-rudder skills.

Given how capital-intensive flight training is, the structure of paying for a fixed number of core aviation units plus a piloting major (rather than open-ended hour-building) gives students a clearer cost and time expectation than pursuing a CPL independently through a standalone flight school.
