Bachelor of Nursing

Swinburne's nursing students train first in dedicated clinical learning laboratories capped at a 12-to-1 student-academic ratio before they're sent into real placements. It's a deliberately small simulation group size that gives students more individual correction time on technique before it matters with an actual patient. From there, students accumulate over 800 hours of supervised Professional Experience Placement across hospitals, community health, aged care and mental health settings, the threshold required to register as a nurse.

Specialty study areas built into the degree include high acuity nursing, mental health, aged and palliative care, rural and Indigenous health care, and family/paediatric and primary health care, a broader specialty spread than some competing nursing degrees that concentrate mainly on acute hospital care. The rural and Indigenous health content in particular signals an intent to prepare graduates for placements and eventual practice outside metropolitan Melbourne, not just within it.

The degree sits alongside Swinburne's TAFE-level Diploma of Nursing, giving the university an internal pathway for enrolled nurses wanting to upgrade to registered nurse qualifications.
