Bachelor of Interior Design

TAFE NSW, Multi-campus, NSW, Australia

About this program

TAFE NSW structures the practical component of this interior design degree in two distinct stages: 70 hours of mandatory work placement earlier in the course, then a compulsory final-year internship in a professional interior design practice that's assessed as its own subject rather than treated as a pass/fail add-on. Students already working in the industry, or those for whom a suitable internship placement can't be found, can substitute one of three alternative electives (sustainability design, total experience design, or lighting interior environments), which is a more flexible arrangement than degrees that make the internship a hard, non-negotiable gate.

Coursework builds from generating original design concepts through to the spatial, structural and material analysis of real interior environments, and the degree deliberately folds in project management and business development skills alongside the creative content, reflecting that most interior designers eventually run or work inside small practices where those business skills matter as much as design talent.

Run through TAFE NSW's Design Centre Enmore, the course emphasises future-focused digital design tools alongside the traditional colour, furniture and fixture specification skills the profession has always required.
