Bachelor of Theology

The Bachelor of Theology is the University of Divinity's foundational undergraduate degree, but "the university" here is a loose word for what's actually a federation: students enrol through one of the constituent colleges (Catholic Theological College, Pilgrim Theological College, Ridley College, Whitley College and others spanning Anglican, Baptist, Catholic, Lutheran, Uniting Church and Salvation Army traditions) rather than a single central campus, and take classes structured around four fields: Humanities, Biblical Studies, Christian Thought and History, and Theology: Mission and Ministry.

That federated structure is the actual selling point, not a bureaucratic quirk. A Bachelor of Theology student can end up studying alongside seminarians from a different denomination entirely, taught by faculty formed in a different tradition, in a way that a single-denomination bible college simply can't replicate. The university has described itself as one of the more sustained ecumenical experiments in Australian higher education, going back over a century to its 1910 founding as the Melbourne College of Divinity.

The three-year, full-time degree suits people heading toward ministry, chaplaincy, religious education or further postgraduate theological study, and it can be completed over as long as nine years part-time, which matters given how many students are already working in parish or pastoral roles while they study.
