Master of Theology

The Master of Theology is the university's two-year (240-point, ten-unit) postgraduate research-leaning degree, sitting a level above coursework masters like the Master of Divinity in the amount of independent scholarly work it asks for. Students take it through one of the University of Divinity's member colleges, and the choice of college matters more than it would at a conventional university, since each carries its own denominational library, faculty specialisation and theological emphasis. A student drawn to Catholic sacramental theology and one drawn to Reformed biblical hermeneutics will often end up doing genuinely different degrees under the same university name.

The course typically combines advanced coursework units with a substantial research component, often a minor thesis, and it's commonly taken by clergy and religious professionals seeking to deepen expertise in a specific area: biblical languages, systematic theology, church history, rather than a general theological education, which the Bachelor of Theology or Master of Divinity already cover.

Graduates go on to doctoral study, teaching roles in theological colleges, or senior ministry and denominational leadership positions where advanced theological training is expected.
